Two in critical condition after Hamburg collision

Two of three people injured when a pickup and car collided Tuesday night in the Town of Hamburg remain hospitalized in critical condition, police said Wednesday.
Police said Kevin Demert Jr., 21, of Farnham, crossed the center line of Route 20/Southwestern Boulevard and collided with a car driven by Ashley Derenda, 18, of Orchard Park. The crash occurred at about 9:30 p.m., near Lake View Road.
Police said both drivers were airlifted to Erie County Medical Center, while a passenger in Derenda's car - Caleb Bantin-Barney, 19, was taken by ambulance to ECMC. Derenda and Barney, whose hometown was not identified, are listed in critical condition and Demert, fair condition.
An investigation continues. Police said it appears that speed and an unsafe lane change by Demert played roles in the crash.
