Gary S. Stamates, of Buffalo, a company comptroller, died unexpectedly Monday in Mercy Hospital. He was 58.
Born in Buffalo, he was a 1971 graduate of Burgard Vocational High School and served with the U.S. Air Force in England. Returning from service, he earned a degree in accounting.
He worked as comptroller for Grosjean Associates for 30 years.
Mr. Stamates volunteered with the Kaisertown Little League softball program in the 1980s and 1990s. Earlier this year, he was honored with a Volunteer of the Year award from Gliding Stars, the adaptive ice-skating program.
Surviving are his wife of 38 years, the former Linda L. Luterek; a son, Shawn; a daughter, Nicole Horst; his mother, Bernice; a brother, Thomas; and two sisters, Susan Makowski and Linda Machowski.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Casimir Catholic Church, Weimar and Casimir streets.
