Genevieve C. Geibel, of Kenmore, a registered nurse and advocate for the mentally ill, died Saturday in Kenmore Mercy Hospital, Town of Tonawanda. She was 90.
Born Genevieve Sweeney in Buffalo, she was a graduate of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at Kenmore Mercy Hospital and Sisters Hospital, retiring in 1975.
Inspired by her son, who suffered from schizophrenia, Mrs. Geibel helped organize a parents group at Buffalo Psychiatric Center, pushed to get dental care for patients there and fought to protect housing for the mentally ill. She was a member of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
A member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, she worked with the church's Outreach Program. Known for her kindness, compassion and deep faith, she was devoted to Father Baker and St. John Neuman.
Her husband, Lawrence F. Sr., died in 1984. Her son, Lawrence, died in 2005.
Surviving are three daughters, Genevieve M. Fitzgerald, Sheila A. Laird and Theresa J. Carbone.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in St. John the Baptist Church, 1085 Englewood Ave., Town of Tonawanda.
