An Amherst man was arrested Sunday for allegedly staging two recent bank robberies, Town of Tonawanda police said today.
Waqar Younas Ghumman, 22, was identified as a possible suspect after local media reported accounts of a man wearing a fake beard and mustache holding up two banks.
The first holdup took place on Aug. 31 at the Key Bank branch at 2344 Niagara Falls Blvd. in the Town of Tonawanda. The second was on Tuesday at a Bank of America branch at 6041 Transit Road in Depew.
The suspect did not display a weapon but did hand tellers at both locations notes claiming to have a gun and threatening to shoot if he didn't get money.
Tips eventually led police to the suspect. After locating his vehicle Sunday afternoon, a search warrant was conducted at his home. The Amherst Police Department SWAT team assisted.
Police discovered evidence linking Ghumman to both crimes at his home.
Investigators said Ghumman has been cooperative and is awaiting arraignment.
