April 1, 1926 - Sept. 6, 2012
Angela Rizzo Vitello, a teacher's aide and institution at Amherst Middle School for more than 30 years, died Thursday in her Eggertsville home after a long illness. She was 86.
Affectionately known as "Mrs. V" to students, Mrs. Vitello worked at the Kings Highway school in Snyder from the early 1980s until her retirement two years ago. The resident of Eggertsville worked briefly at the former Eggert Road School before moving over to Amherst Middle School.
She worked as a classroom aide, cafeteria monitor, study hall supervisor and book room coordinator during her career. Fellow staff members called her a motherlike figure who knew everyone's name. One teacher said he felt special because "Angie" often baked cookies for him. Later, he learned she made cookies for many other co-workers as well.
Born and raised in the Whitney Place neighborhood of Buffalo's West Side, Mrs. Vitello began her school career in her early 50s after she raised her three children. A planned three- or four-year job turned into three decades.
Mrs. Vitello's husband, Frank, died last year. She is survived by her daughter, Hope; two sons, Frank and Michael; three sisters, Josephine Pera, Jessie Smario and Sarah Rizzo; two brothers, Sammy and Christy; and treasured family friend, Kathy Bellissimo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Benedict Church, Main Street and Eggert Road, Eggertsville.
