LOCKPORT - Two City of Lockport men were arrested following a bungled attempt to steal golf clubs over the weekend from a garage on McIntosh Drive, city police said today.
Police said that about 2:45 p.m. Saturday, the two men drove up to a house on McIntosh, off Willow Street. The passenger got out of an SUV, entered the home's attached garage, grabbed two sets of golf clubs and walked back to the vehicle, police said.
The thief dropped the clubs, worth $5,000, at the curb after he was confronted by the homeowners, said police, who noted the thief also banged his head on the SUV door frame during his escape.
A neighbor called 911 and gave a dispatcher a description of the SUV and its license plate, and Lockport Police Lt. Shawn Kilroy spotted this vehicle a few minutes later on the city's north side.
The passenger had fled by then but the driver, Timothy A. Speers, 40, was detained for traffic violations and later gave a statement, police said.
Jeremy P. Barnes, 34, was later arrested as Speers' accomplice, police said.
Both are charged with burglary and grand larceny.
