Monsignor Richard J. Gill, a Catholic priest who was pastor at two Chautauqua County parishes, died Thursday at his home in Dunkirk.
He was 88.
Monsignor Gill was pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Silver Creek from 1986 until his retirement in 1999. Prior to that, he was pastor at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brocton from 1974 to 1986. He was appointed Prelate of Honor in 1993.
Born in Dunkirk, Monsignor Gill was a graduate of St. Mary Academy in Dunkirk. He graduated from St. Bonaventure University and Christ the King Seminary.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He was ordained into the priesthood in 1956 at St. Joseph New Cathedral in Buffalo. That same year, he served as a missionary apostolate at St. Helen Catholic Church in Hinsdale.
Monsignor Gill served as an assistant at several parishes, including St. James in Jamestown, Ascension in North Tonawanda, SS. Peter and Paul in Jamestown, St. John the Evangelist in Buffalo, St. John in Alden; St. John the Baptist in the Town of Tonawanda; and SS. Peter and Paul in Hamburg.
He is survived by a sister, Winifred Langen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 165 Central Ave., Silver Creek.
