Tonawanda firefighters are battling a large brush fire near the DuPont plant.
Towering flames as tall as 25 feet were reported from the scene, town police said.
An explosion caused by arcing downed wires occurred shortly after noon.
The fire was reported at about 11:50 a.m.
All of the town's fire companies were dispatched to the scene.
National Grid was alerted, as well as railroad officials because train tracks run through the property.
