"Culture@Sample," a new monthly art and electronic music event featuring local DJs and work by emerging visual artists, begins at 11 tonight in the Allentown restaurant Sample (242 Allen St.). The launch will feature photographs by Christina Liang and paintings by Dan Manhardt with music by DJs Nitronic, Alex Vulaj, Christian Dharma and the TrakBenders.

Manhardt, a young Buffalo painter, presents a series of textural paintings along with some pieces painted directly onto skateboards. Liang, a photographer whose photographs document abandoned and crumbling structures in Rust Belt cities, will present a body of work about Buffalo's industrial decline. "My work documents what happens following the rise and fall of industry— the decline in population and the growth of crime, vandalism, and architectural abandonment," Liang wrote in her artist statement.

The 21-and-over event is to be presented on the last Friday of every month at Sample. For more information, call 883-1675 or visit
