A manhunt for a convicted sex offender involved in an altercation with his parole officer ended Thursday afternoon when the Buffalo SWAT team found the man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the Langfield Housing Projects on the far East Side.
Demone Frazier fatally shot himself in a stairwell of a residence in the vicinity of Hempstead Avenue, authorities said. His body was located at about 12:30 p.m.
“When police first arrived, they heard a gunshot. They didn’t know if they were being shot at,” a law enforcement official said. The shot apparently turned out to be Frazier taking his own life.
The manhunt started Thursday morning when the 28-year-old parolee was involved in an altercation with his parole officer and managed to flee with a gun and the officer’s vehicle.
Frazier was involved in a “serious incident” with the officer during a residence check, according to state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision officials. The officer was unharmed.
Frazier was convicted of third-degree rape and was sentenced to 1½ to three years in prison, before being paroled Dec. 10, 2009, officials said. It was his second stint behind bars.
Frazier has been under “Strict and Intensive Supervision and Treatment," which requires civil confinement or strict post-release supervision for the most dangerous sex offenders.
