A Polish twist on pizza

When the Corpus Christi parishoners were figuring out the menu for their 33rd annual Dozynki, or Polish Harvest Festival, they wanted to include a twist on tradition.

Sure, there will going to be the classic Polish platter food like pierogis, Polish sausage, cabbage rolls and so on at the festival, next Friday through Aug. 19 at the church (199 Clark St., 896-1050, dozynki.corpuschristibuffalo.org). But what about Polish pizza?

"Our church started making Polish pizzas a few years ago," explained organizer Vicki Moroz. "This year, when we had a volunteer party we threw some recipes together and had a taste testing, and these are the three we settled on."

So for $3 a slice, or $22 for a whole pie, you can try pierogi pizza (mushroom base, sliced potatoes, farmer's cheese, onions, mozzarella), galumpki pizza (hamburger, rice, tomato sauce and cabbage) or Polish sausage with cabbage.

Also featured this year: chlodnik, cold beet and cucumber soup. Plus Polish music, dancing, and raffles, all to support the church. "I don't think anyone else is doing Polish pizzas in the area. I think we're pretty unique in that."
