At 8 p.m. Saturday, New York City-based dancer and choreographer Makeda Thomas will lead a new dance production commissioned for Mark Goldman's ongoing performance series at Canalside's picturesque ruins.
"Sighting Freedom," a reflection on Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, will take on a special significance because of its proximity to a number of important Underground Railroad sites. "All that was built on top this structure -- all that was manufactured -- is gone, and only this foundation remains. For me, this evokes a powerful metaphor," Thomas wrote of the historic Canalside site on her website. "Ultimately, 'Sighting Freedom' is about the possibilities of what can now happen in this revitalized space. And it asks questions many asked themselves as they got free: What now? What goes from here?"
The performance is free. For more information, visit www.eriecanalharbor.com.
