Nickname: Bears (5-3)
Coach: Terry Gray, 10th season
Outlook: The Bears return nine players on both sides of the ball, including all of their skill position players. Three first-team all-stars dot the roster, including senior QB/WR/RB/DB Thad Johnson, a four-year varsity player. Johnson, an all-WNY first-teamer in baseball, has given a verbal commitment to St. Bonaventure for baseball. Seniors OL/DL Nathan Anderson and TE/LB Nick Mitchell join Johnson as returning all-stars. Other skill position players returning are WR/DB Dalton Peterson, RB/DB Devone Adelgren, QB/LB Preston Wiltsie as well as center Jacob Caldwell. Tough opener at Randolph.

All-star RB Davonte Whitsett accounted for 13 TDs, including a 90-yard fumble recovery. All-star DL Maurice Cheatom had five sacks. All-star LB Ikeem Lyons recorded 54 tackles. Senior Ricky McCool was a gym class discovery; he is such a natural athlete, he will start at QB.

Coach: Gary Swetland, 21st season
Outlook: The Panthers have depth at the skill positions, but coach Swetland said his team isn't where he hoped they'd be three days before the opener. Junior RB Zach Pilger is a very high caliber runner. Also sharing the ball in the backfield will be senior Jordan Smith and Matt Wetzler. FB/RB/LB/NG Chris Hellwig is another marque player who got himself ready in the offseason to play. Portville looks to get WR Ryan Marcellin more touches. Swetland said senior QB/DB Colt Lowe has his work cut out for him to equal last season's all-star production.

Senior SE/DB George Pitchford, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the playoffs, is ready to go. Senior TE/DB Brady Morrison is a returning two-way starter. The Cardinals' scrimmage was against Southwestern. "We were happy with how some of the younger, new guys stepped in and did a pretty good with their assignments," said Slater. "They weren't totally brain dead -- that was a positive outcome of that." All-star RB Mason Burch tore up his knee this summer and is lost for the season.
