A NEW 'DO
Suddenly, they're popping up everywhere. Mohawks are back in. And we're not talking fauxhawks, but the real carved-into-your-head deal (unless you're female, then you get a bit more leeway with the clippers). Even better than a Mohawk is a Mohawk in a bright, primary color.
To help you achieve the look, we've got some advice on products and techniques:
Unnatural colors (pinks, blues, greens, etc.) are always semi-permanent. It's impossible to create a permanent formula with such vibrant colors. The best way to keep your hair looking more punky and less funky is to bleach your hair first, then follow the instructions on the hair dye. We like the classic Manic Panic (www.manicpanic.com). Each is $12, but you also will want to invest in some plastic gloves for your hands, Vaseline for your hairline, and whatever else you need to protect the rest of yourself and your house from becoming Cotton Candy Pink. The company also has colors that glow in blacklights, and its own bleaching kit, called Flash Lightning ($10.80).
Every time you wash your hair, a bit more of it will come out. However, if you do the color all over instead of in stripes, you can even put a little bit of the dye in your shampoo. Just make sure your parents know which bottle has the Bad Boy Blue in it.
Once your hair is cut into the Mohawk, you'll just grab a bunch of hair glue or gel. For hair spray, we recommend Rave spritzers -- not the aerosol kind. Hang upside down and smooth it all up into a point. You can use a hair dryer or a straightener to help get it smooth and straight. When finished, spray the heck out of it with hair spray.
WIN THE ULTIMATE PROM
Win a chance to throw a major end-of-school party with WintheUltimateProm.com. Just form a team of die-hards (anyone over 13 will do), and get the word out. To win, your school will have to get the most votes online between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30. Winners are announced Dec. 15. The school with the most votes wins $25,000 for its prom. People who work hard to promote their school can also win prizes such as cash or gift cards.
Past grand prize winners include Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, two-time winner Mira Mesa High School in San Diego and, most recently, Allen High School in Allen, Texas. The contest is sponsored by Grand Canyon University. Check it out at wintheulimateprom.com.
