Run/walk to help fund Flight 3407 memorial

Story tools:

A 5K run to raise money for a Flight 3407 memorial will be held Saturday morning in Clarence Center.

To register for the 5K run, as well as a one-mile walk, go to www.3407fundraiser.com . There is a $20 fee for the run and $15 fee for the walk.

Race organizers said they are limiting the number of participants to 1,000 runners and 500 walkers because the route goes along the bike path and cannot accommodate an unlimited number of people.

The 5K run begins at 9:30 a. m. at the Clarence Center Volunteer Fire Company, 9415 Clarence Center Road. The one-mile walk begins at 10 a. m. Buffalo Sabres defenseman Teppo Numminen, a Clarence resident, will be on hand to start the race.

A party following the race will feature 10 bands, children’s activities and a silent auction. Many auction items were donated by members of the Sabres, several of whom live in Clarence. There is a $5 per person fee for the after-party.

Many families of victims of Continental Connection Flight 3407 are expected to attend the event. Flight 3407 crashed in Clarence Center on Feb. 12, killing 49 onboard as well as one person on the ground.

The race is intended to help raise funds for a memorial being planned to honor the victims of the crash. Details of the memorial are still being worked out by the town and families of the victims.

The race is expected to be an annual event, honoring the victims as well as the first responders at the crash site.
