Sullivan: Vick to Bills would be a flawed plan
Column as I see 'em:
• No offense to Tony Dungy, one of the most respected men in football. But if he thinks Buffalo would be a good fit for Michael Vick, I have two words for him: no thanks.
Sure, the Bills need help at quarterback. They kicked the tires when Vick got out of jail for dogfighting. What they don't need is a washout who couldn't read defenses or make accurate throws before he went to jail. His days as a viable NFL starter are over.
What are the Bills, some halfway house for fallen stars? How's that Terrell Owens thing working out? The Bills need a solution, not a sideshow. They should find their next QB the conventional way Ô in the draft. Let some other team play the sap on this one.
• The most amazing thing about Navy's win over Notre Dame was that the Midshipmen weren't that giddy about it. They did it two years ago, right? Charlie Weis has done the improbable: He's made losing to a service academy seem routine.
Weis is in big trouble. After the Navy game, nose tackle Ian Williams said "they outschemed us." That's a bold statement by a college kid, and a stinging blow to the presumed genius. Somewhere, Tyrone Willingham is smiling. He had a .583 winning percentage in three years at Notre Dame and got fired. Weis has a .593 mark in five. Good thing he had Willingham's players at the start.
• Mike Williams hasn't spoken publicly since quitting the Syracuse football team. It's understandable. The Riverside High grad said he let Buffalo down when he was suspended for cheating 16 months ago. Upon his return, Williams said he would prove he wasn't the stereotypical failed Buffalo athlete. His words ring hollow now. Williams was one of four SU players in an auto accident two Sundays ago at 5:30 a.m. on the I-90 near Turning Stone Casino. The other three were suspended. Williams, who had been suspended for a game two weeks earlier, left the team.
Williams, the top receiver in the Big East, will likely enter the draft and hope a team gambles on a kid who messed up his career not once, but twice.
• Hideki Matsui was the MVP of the World Series. Sadly, he's also the most likely Yankee to depart in free agency. Matsui will be 36 in June. He's breaking down. Brian Cashman, the GM, wants to get younger and faster. The Yanks can't afford a player who is exclusively a DH. The Yanks need the DH to give occasional rest to older players like Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon — assuming they re-sign him.
• Once again, the Devils are on a roll despite the absence of some key players (including Patrik Elias and Jay Pandolfo) to injury. Jersey has won five straight and allowed more than two goals in a game once in its last nine, a 4-1 home loss to the Sabres on Oct. 28. The Devils are 8-0 on the road.
• Speaking of 8-0, the Colts are 8-0 for the third time in five seasons. They're on their way to winning at least 12 games for a seventh straight year. It would be Bill Polian's 13th season of 11-plus wins in 22 years as a GM.
• Jonny Flynn was averaging 14.3 points and 3.1 assists as of Monday. But the Niagara Falls grad has struggled with Kurt Rambis' triangle offense. Flynn split the T'wolves' point guard duties with Ramon Session for two games, but has since regained the bulk of the minutes.
• It's hard to take the Heisman Trophy seriously when the top three candidates are from the top three teams. Is it impossible for a great college player to be on a team that's merely good?
• College hoops are under way. Look out for Michigan, which is ranked 15th in the nation. John Beilein is in his third season. It was only a matter of time before he made them a Final Four contender.
• What do Austin Collie, Johnny Knox and Keenan Burton have in common? They're all NFL wide receivers with more catches than Lee Evans or Terrell Owens.
