Best Bets: Bears, ghosts and more

Tips for family fun by Jane Kwiatkowski

Story tools:

1. Get to know a bear, soon. Sunday is Bear Awareness Day at the Buffalo Zoo, so from 11 a. m. to 3 p. m., expect zoo keepers to tell you all about the big furry mammals, and how the climate change is affecting them. Make some bear crafts, too. Free with admission to the zoo at 300 Parkside Ave. Call 995-6133 with questions.

2. Call it a spirited weekend. Ghost tours at the Iron Island Museum run every two hours, from noon to 6 p. m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For $5, see why the museum was declared haunted. On Saturday only, there will be another kind of spirit when wine tasting will be conducted from 1 to 6 p. m. Cost for ghost tour and wine tasting is $15 (and includes glass). Find the museum at 998 Lovejoy St. Call 892- 3084 to reserve your place.

3. Watch the painted ponies! There will be amusement rides and more at the Southgate Plaza Carnival running from 5 to 10 p. m. Friday through Sunday (with fireworks Sunday at dusk) and noon to 6 p. m. Monday. Chicken dinner on Saturday. To learn more, call 674-5050. Find the fun at 950 Union Road in West Seneca.

4. What’s red, white and blue? Old Glory, of course, and the Letchworth State Park Balloon Rally launching at 6:30 p. m. Friday at the Archery Field near the Castile Entrance. Mass balloon flights will take place again at 6 a. m. and 6:30 p. m. Saturday and Sunday and 6 a. m. Monday. For details, call (585) 493-3625.
