The Buzz: Voice from the past

News Columnist

Story tools:

New to Facebook, the social networking site, Buzz is inspired by watching the rise of other newbies. Take Joseph Ellicott. The city father has posted his portrait and profile (birthdate: Nov. 1, 1760), and he is making friends at a breakneck pace. According to Facebook custom, he notes his doings.

“Joseph Ellicott was going to dig his carriage out of the snow, but forget it.” “Joseph Ellicott is going to the Lafayette Tap Room to party like it’s 1799.” Ellicott is kindly but gruff. Someone asked: “Who are you?” He shot back: “Don’t you know me? I created the City of Buffalo.” Someone else wrote: “Sorry about the ruined design of lower Genesee Street.” Ellicott replied: “Sorry doesn’t move the Convention Center, but thanks for the nice words. Have a great 2009.”

Christmas is over...

... and business is business, the saying goes. It’s not quite true. Returning to work with tinsel in our hair, Buzz went looking in our purse for our company ID and all we could find were Legos. Our nieces had created a sculpture and this was where it had ended up. We weren’t the only one scrambled. It seemed as if Santa gave the city a box of life-size Matchbox cars and they were scattered every which way. An SUV sat overturned on the 198. And near where the 198 meets the 190, a red car sat on Christmas morning with its driver’s side wheels on the pavement and its passenger-side wheels up on the cement embankment next to the road. The car looked undamaged, as if no one had been hurt. Cops were standing around, taking notes. They looked puzzled. We don’t blame them.

Shoppers’ dilemma

There is lost. And then there is really lost. Friday morning on Goat Island, our heart went out to a couple of women who pulled up in a car with Ontario plates. They asked for directions. Fine. Everyone is lost on Goat Island. But then ... but then ... they said: “We’re looking for the Galleria Mall.” What kind of eggnog had these two been quaffing? Obviously there is more to this story.

Blowin’ in the wind

Funniest thing about our weird weather: dozens of unused suggestive greeting cards blowing around Delaware Park, picturing a nude man. Buzz took off our mittens to open one. It said: “I’ve been awfully naughty –what are you going to do about it?” Besides blowing these cards around the city, the high winds cleared the streets of snow more efficiently than our crews ever could. So suggest the folks who weigh in on the Buffalo News blogs. Best gripe: “I want to know why in the middle of June if you are three minutes late moving your car there’s the little jerk from parking enforcement sticking it to you, and now in the middle of winter you can leave your car for five days and the little idiots are nowhere to be seen?” Tell ’em!

The buzz

They sell gift cards at Dollar Tree. Wouldn’t it be fun to give someone, oh, $100 to spend there? ... Have to love a dad who dealt with a panhandler at the University Metro Rail Station by yelling: “You’ve got me at my most vulnerable! Two kids running around, my wallet out –” Have to love the panhandler, too, for retreating. Peace on earth!
