Lindy Ruff shook his hand last after it was all over Sunday and the two teams began going their separate ways. He met Ryan Miller near center ice, put his left arm around his shoulder, patted him on the back and whispered in his ear, the Sabres coach and his goaltender reunited again.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Back seven years ago, when this coastal city was awarded these Olympic Games, this would have been how nearly any denizen of any province — from the cosmopolitan city of Vancouver to the tiny town of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia — would have drawn up the final play on the final day.

Mesler's gold a win for all of us
