Plea of not guilty entered in shooting

Story tools:

LOCKPORT—A man already serving two prison terms was arraigned Thursday in Niagara County Court on charges of shooting a man in the back in Lewiston on May 30.

Garrett E. General, 22, who has listed addresses on Mount Hope Road on the Tuscarora Indian Reservation and in Oshweken, Ont., pleaded not guilty to second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The case was previously referred to as an attempted murder, but that’s not what the grand jury decided, Assistant District Attorney Claudette S. Caldwell said. Police have said the Lewiston shooting stemmed from an argument over a stolen car.

General is serving a total of 11 years for stealing an all-terrain vehicle from a Wheatfield dealership in September 2008 and stealing a sport utility vehicle and three flat-screen TV sets in Cheektowaga in December 2008.
