Woman raped, robbed in street encounter

Story tools:

NIAGARA FALLS—What began as a casual encounter turned violent, with a city woman being raped and robbed early Saturday, police said.

The 38-year-old victim told police she was walking at Third and Niagara streets at about 1:30 a. m., when she struck up a conversation with a man who ended up following her. In the 700 block of Whirlpool Street, the man took a shortcut on an old access road leading into the Niagara River gorge, and the woman followed, police said.

Then, he choked, slapped and raped her and stole her cellular telephone and four gold rings, valued at $675, police added.
