Ex-bookkeeper admits animal hospital theft
Deborah L. Newton admitted Thursday stealing $750,000 from the Sheridan Small Animal Hospital where she worked as a bookkeeper for two decades.
She faces up to 15 years a prison term if she does not come up with at least $150,000 restitution by next spring, a judge told her.
Newton pleaded guilty plea to a second-degree grand larceny charge for the thefts from the facility. State Supreme Court Justice John L. Michalek allowed Newton to remain free without bail pending her April 28 sentencing.
The judge told her that, if she comes up with at least $150,000 in restitution by her sentencing date, she will face a prison term of one to three years.
Prosecutors did not disclose what she did with the money, and Newton, 49, of Sickmon Avenue, Hamburg, could not be reached to comment.
