Man held in car chase ordered to remain jailed

Story tools:

A Buffalo man was ordered Wednesday to remain in jail without bail pending his trial for allegedly causing the injuries to one of the Amherst police officers pursuing him on foot after a high-speed car chase Aug. 13.

John R. Cipollina, 47, of Tennyson Avenue, was ordered to remain jailed without bail by State Supreme Court Justice Russell P. Buscaglia, who pointed to the defendant’s refusal to take prescribed medications in the Erie County Holding Center and to follow the advice of a prior attorney.

Cipollina was recently indicted on second-degree assault and reckless endangerment charges. His trial is a scheduled for March 3.

Amherst Police Officer Dean Swoger suffered a leg injury that kept him off duty for a brief time when he was struck by an Amherst police cruiser during a brief foot chase of Cipollina on the lawn of the Church of Latter-day Saints in the 1400 block of Maple Road after a high-speed car chase.
