Three hurt as vehicle, Island school bus crash
A vehicle collided with a school bus at Whitehaven and Baseline roads on Grand Island at about 3 p. m. Wednesday, sending the bus into a tree and injuring three people, Erie County sheriff’s officials said.
The driver of the vehicle, Fay Avarello, 81, was taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center, where she was being treated for chest and facial injuries. The school bus driver, Nancy Heftka, 54, suffered a leg injury and was taken to Kenmore Mercy Hospital, Town of Tonawanda. Their conditions were unavailable.
One of 22 Grand island School District students aboard the bus suffered a minor cut and was released to his parents for treatment at a physician’s office, sheriff’s officials said. The other 21 students were examined at the scene and released to parents.
Police said Avarello, eastbound on Whitehaven, passed a red light and collided with the bus, headed north on Baseline.
