Students escape fire in Alfred; businesses lost
ALFRED—Two beloved institutions in this college town, the Collegiate Restaurant and Alex’s College Spot, were damaged but saved in a fire early Thursday that destroyed two nearby businesses and forced more than two dozen college students out of their upstairs apartments.
Alfred University officials announced Thursday that nine of its students who were living in second-floor apartments above West Side Liquor at Main and West University streets were “safe and accounted for” but lost all their clothing and personal possessions.
The two businesses that were destroyed, West Side Liquor and Alfred Sports Center, were housed in the wood-frame building where the fire broke out at about 6 a. m. Thursday. That building sustained a partial collapse and was leveled later Thursday.
The Collegiate Restaurant, located in a brick building next to the wooden structure, sustained heavy smoke and water damage, but will reopen, presumably in weeks. Alex’s, located nearby, was cleared to reopen Thursday night.
