Fireplace sparks blamed for blaze injuring three

WILSON—A fireplace sparked an early-morning fire that left three people injured and damaged a home at 43 Sunset Island, Niagara County sheriff’s deputies said.

Sparks from the fire ignited a couch in the home shortly after 2 a. m.,according to rescue workers. The occupants, Barbara and RobertDobosz}, were attempting to douse the flames with water when emergency crews arrived. The Wilson Fire Company extinguished the blaze.

Sheriff’s Deputy Ray Needle suffered a broken leg when he fell down a set of stairs while trying to enter the home and lead the occupants to safety. He was treated in Eastern Niagara Regional Hospital, Newfane.

The couple were treated for minor burns to the hands and arms at the scene.

No damage estimate was available.
