Commercial vehicle check results in arrests, violations

Story tools:

A commercial vehicle checkpoint Tuesday resulted in about 40 percent of the vehicles being taken out of service for safety violations, as well as 412 violations and several arrests on various criminal charges, Cheektowaga police said Wednesday.

The checkpoint was conducted by 60 officers from several agencies, from 8 a. m. to 6 p. m.

All commercial vehicles within a 5- mile radius were stopped and instructed to go to 2500 Walden Ave. for inspection.

Police said the goal of the operation was the enforcement of state and federal laws on commercial vehicles, and enhancing cooperation among agencies responsible for border and homeland security.

Edward Skierczynski, 43, of Cheektowaga, and Daniel Belfour, 45, of Lancaster, were both charged with possession of stolen property.

Police said the two were in a dump truck towing a stolen backhoe.
