Man charged with DWI in crash that injured 3
PORTLAND—A Brocton man faces a slew of charges after he allegedly rear-ended another vehicle Thursday evening in the town of Portland while he was drunk and then fled the scene of the crash, Chautauqua County sheriff’s officials reported.
Police said Stephen L. Hanks, 58, failed to stop his pickup truck while approaching a traffic light at a construction zone on Route 20.
He then struck a vehicle driven by Tylah M. Dejesus, no age listed, of Dunkirk just after 9 p. m., deputies said.
Dejesus’ husband and 11-year-old son were passengers in her vehicle. The impact injured all 3 occupants of the Dejesus vehicle, police said. Hanks initially stopped at the scene but later fled, police said.
Authorities tracked Hanks down to his Peerless Street home and arrested him. Besides DWI, he was also charged with aggravated unlicensed operation as well as leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and multiple vehicle infractions.
He was taken to Chautauqua County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail.
