Body in river identified as man from Portugal

LEWISTON … State police identified a body found May 31 in the lower Niagara River as a Portugal man trying to enter the United States illegally.

Using dental records, police said, they identified the man as Sergio Gomes-Conceicao, 35.

The investigation revealed that on May 11, Gomes-Conceicao drowned while attempting to illegally enter the United States from Canada by crossing the lower Niagara River. No foul played is suspected.

GomesÕConceicao was a Portuguese citizen but had previously lived in Oakhurst, N.J.

His body was found by a fisherman near the sand docks in Queenston and pulled into the docks by authorities in Lewiston at Joseph Davis State Park.
