Baby is recovering from attack by terrier
City of Tonawanda police say the 3-month-old boy attacked by a dog in his home Sunday afternoon was resting comfortably on Monday, while the fate of the family’s two canines has yet to be decided.
The infant suffered serious injuries in the attack, which happened about 1 p. m., and was taken to Women and Children’s Hospital from a home on Gath Terrace in the city’s Riverview neighborhood.
The child was treated in the hospital’s emergency care unit, and underwent surgery for bite wounds to the chest and stomach area.
Police have not disclosed the identity of the infant or the family.
The infant was on the floor in an area surrounded by a plastic barrier when the dog, a Staffordshire terrier, which is in the pit bull family, attacked. The mother immediately called 911, police said.
The dog was one of two removed from the home. The second dog was not involved in the attack, officials said. Both were taken to the SPCA and a decision has not yet been made about what will happen to them.
