Woman, son charged with insurance fraud

Story tools:

An Amherst woman and her teenage son face up to seven years in prison on charges of insurance fraud and attempted grand larceny, the state Insurance Department said.

Roseann Degenfelder, 43, and Jeremy Perez, both of Fairgreen Drive were arrested by Amherst police for allegedly filing a fraudulent $7,000 insurance claim after telling police Degenfelder’s motorcycle had been stolen, state officials said.

Police launched an investigation after Degenfelder’s 2007 Yamaha was found unattended on the side of the Youngmann Highway in July. The motorcycle was recovered shortly before Degenfelder called police to report it was “stolen,” authorities said.

State officials said Perez abandoned the motorcycle on the side of the highway so his mother could file a claim for the loss with Geico, her insurance company.
