News sportswriter hurt in fall at All High Stadium

Story tools:

A veteran sportswriter for The Buffalo News suffered head and neck injuries Saturday when he fell down a flight of stairs while covering a high school football contest at Buffalo’s All High Stadium.

Tom Borrelli, 51, was described by authorities as badly injured, but they said he was able to talk to firefighters and rescue personnel after the 4:20 p. m. accident.

“We had medical personnel at the game, so he got treatment immediately,” said Stefan Mychajliw, spokesman for the Buffalo School District. “I do know that Tom was able to communicate with firefighters and ambulance personnel soon after it happened.”

Authorities said Borrelli fell down a long flight of stairs leading up to the stadium’s press box while covering the Harvard Cup title game between Riverside and McKinley high schools.

Buffalo fire officials said he was in stable condition when taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he was still undergoing treatment late Saturday night.

“There are conflicting reports” on what caused the accidental fall, Mychajliw said.
