Jellyfish swarming northward as the world warms

This year's swarm of Nomura, the world's largest jellyfish, is one of the worst ever seen in Japan. Scientists believe climate change — the warming of oceans — has allowed Nomura and some of the almost 2,000 jellyfish species to expand their ranges and overall numbers, much as warming has helped ticks, bark beetles and other pests to spread to new latitudes. This audio slideshow offers a look at the jellyfish menace off Japan. (Updated: 11/17/09 11:56 PM )

A paw and a prayer: U.S. pilots save shelter animals

Lady Di is a lovely purebred collie with a pleasant disposition, just like lots of other dogs dumped at shelters in areas that lack anywhere near enough would-be owners. Unlike all but a lucky few of those animals, she got a plane ride away from death row thanks to Pilots N Paws, a group that moves pets from overwhelmed shelters to communities, often ones with higher median income, where they'll stand a better chance of adoption. Training the Afghan army poses challenges for U.S.

Afghan army recruit Shahidullah Ahmadi can't read — and neither can nine out of 10 soldiers in the Afghan National Army. Just as in Iraq, the U.S. is finding it no small task to recruit, train and equip a force that is large and competent enough to operate successfully on its own. This audio slideshow takes a look at the effort. (Updated: 09/16/09 10:47 PM )
