Orchard Park teen killed in Aurora snowmobile accident
An Orchard Park teenager was killed late Tuesday afternoon when his snowmobile crashed into a corn crib in the Town of Aurora, East Aurora police said today.
Kevin McPhail, 15, of Berg Road, was out snowmobiling with his older brother in a field on private property off Davis Road, which is also Route 240, when his sled struck the farm structure, according to Police Lt. Jack Wolff.
The older brother called 911 for help at about 5:40 p.m. and the teen was transported by West Falls Volunteer Company firefighters to Mercy Hospital in South Buffalo, where he was pronounced dead.
"It's a terrible tragedy," Wolff said.
An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the exact cause of death.
McPhail, who was wearing a helmet, was a sophomore at West Seneca West High School.
"Kevin was a great young man. He was always happy to be in school and seemed to make a great impact on those around him," said high school Principal Jon T. MacSwan.
