It’s true that there are two seasons in Western New York, but they aren’t winter and road construction season. They are winter and Festival Season, which started as soon as the ice was off the sidewalks and goes into full swing this month.
We have festivals for everything here, from ethnic groups — Italian, Irish, Greek and Swedish, just for starters — to historical events, from the French and Indian War to Juneteenth. We celebrate our watery heritage annually, at the Valley Community Center’s Buffalo River Fest, and once a century, at this year’s centennial celebrations of the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty.
We celebrate food, from peaches, tomatoes and corn to burgers and chicken wings, and even crabapples. We celebrate music, from jazz and folk to funk. And we reunite neighborhoods, from Amherst Street in Black Rock to Alden and Williamsville. The cities get into the act, too, with Buffalo and Niagara Falls welcoming natives back home with events from June 25 to 28.
