FBI crime statistics: Violent crime went down in 2008

Cities in the United States got safer in 2008, while small towns grew more dangerous, according to FBI data released June 1. The FBI says violent crime nationwide dropped by 2.5 percent last year. Property crimes also fell, by 1.6 percent, according to the preliminary data collected by the FBI. Search the FBI's databases to see how your city fared. (Updated: 06/01/09 3:55 PM )

The U.S. Census Bureau's national population estimates show that our nation is becoming older and more racially and ethnically diverse. The estimates found that nearly half (47 percent) of the nation's children younger than 5 were a minority in 2008, with 25 percent being Hispanic. President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration committee has disclosed the names of all donors. Contributions to the inauguration were limited to $50,000 per person; Obama also banned contributions from corporations, political action committees, registered lobbyists, foreigners and registered foreign agents. Donors are being limited to $50,000 and include liberal activist and hedge fund billionaire George Soros, as well as entertainment industry figures such as actors Sharon Stone, Halle Berry and Jamie Foxx.
