Inaction in Albany (November 2009)

This week, the New York State Legislature is in special session in Albany, a session called by Gov. David A. Paterson to deal with a ballooning state deficit. Gov. Paterson has warned that the state soon will run out of cash to pay its bills, and that taxes and debt are no real answers to this dilemma. Albany's unfinished business (June 2009)

Last week, the New York State Senate went into circus mode with a surprise Republican coup that took the majority and Senate leadership posts away from the Democrats and triggered days of political chaos. Early next year, Hillary Rodham Clinton will vacate her Senate position to become U.S. Secretary of State in the Obama administration. Gov. David Paterson will then appoint a Senate replacement. Upstate communities are rightly adamant the new senator pay attention to their concerns, which often are overshadowed by the political power of New York City and other downstate areas. The Poughkeepsie Journal editorial board reached out to editorialists across upstate to get their thoughts on these issues -- and to find out what the new senator needs to know about upstate.
