EMPIRE STATE GAMES

State to sell ESG naming rights

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Story tools:

The naming rights to the Empire State Games are up for sale.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has issued a request for sponsorships of the games. That includes a “primary sponsor,” which would receive naming rights and a prominent place in ESG activities.

The state office also is seeking other sponsors, which could be attached to particular classes of competition.

The goal is to raise $1 million over two years, which would help put the games on a sound financial footing and allow the reinstatement of a full slate of events: summer, winter, senior and games for the physically challenged.

“Meeting our fundraising goal is critical to the long-term viability of the Empire State Games program,” State Parks Commissioner Carol Ash said.

Prospective sponsors must submit proposals by Oct. 9.

The Summer Games, which will take place in Buffalo from July 21-25 in 2010, draw more than 6,000 athletes for competition with an economic impact of $10 million to $11 million for the host city.
