West Side wins bronze
BATAVIA, Ohio — Crews from Buffalo’s West Side Rowing Club and Canisius High School won national honors Sunday in the final day of the USRowing Youth National Championships on Harsha Lake, near Cincinnati.
West Side, coached by Aileen McNamara and Frank Becht, took the bronze medal in the final of the women’s lightweight eight. Canisius won the petite final in the men’s lightweight eight, the equivalent of finishing seventh in the nation.
The West Siders finished 7.37 seconds behind the first-place Los Gatos (Calif.) Rowing Club. The boat contained Mallorie Reinecke, Danielle Carlino, Sarah Giancola, Brianna Reinecke, Rachel Hirschbeck, Kate Kocielniak, Shannon McDonnell, Kelsey Kean and coxswain Alison Todd.
The Canisius crew won its race by 3.13 seconds with a boat manned by Patrick Kenney, Sean Kenney, Rob Piscatelli, Will Larkin, Joe Herzig, Stephen Becht, Greg Rusch, John Cotter and coxswain Mike Szymoniak.
A Canisius crew made up of R. J. Rubino, Andrew Sauvageau, Jamie Hamp, John Myer and coxswain Ian Forsyth finished fifth in the petite final of the men’s lightweight four with coxswain.
The Nardin Academy women’s lightweight eight finished fourth in its petite final. The team consists of Rebecca Papaj, Charlotte Lane, Katherine Gloekler, Puja Sztorc, Rosa Forgach, Raka Forgach, Erin Wylie, Ashley Dikeman and coxswain Kate Ciminelli.
On Saturday, Buffalo Seminary won the youth fours consolation final with a crew of Hilary Epes, Kyle Friedman, Sarah Grace, Kate Yeksigian and coxswain Carolyn Hayden.
