St. Joe’s senior Michael Whitney of Buffalo has been honored by Hasek’s Heroes, an organization founded by the legendary Sabres’ goaltender, with their inaugural “Dominator Award,” presented to the area’s most outstanding goalie. Whitney flourished in net his senior season, posting an overall record of 9-2-2.

Whitney carried a 93 average at St. Joe’s, and volunteered at Northgate Nursing Home for the past four years. He will attend the University of Pittsburgh.

D’Youville College has named Lew Potter head coach of its women’s soccer team. Potter has experience coaching at all levels including an extensive collegiate background. In 2006 and 2007 Potter was an assistant coach with the Buffalo State women’s team. He is currently the director of coaching and tournament operations at Hamburg Soccer Club and is a head coach with the Empire/Buffalo United Soccer Club.

Ten Erie Community College student-athletes were named Academic All-Conference by Region III of the NJCAA for their academic performance. They were led by swimmer Amanda Gonter (Holland) who finished with a 3.95 GPA and followed by volleyball player Rebecca Hayes (Bennett) with a 3.93. Other honorees were: Ikyaator Msoo (basketball), Chris Norman( baseball), Dan Melidona (bowling), Jessica Mamon (bowling), Bradley Cash (football), Brad Gibson (baseball), James Wray (soccer), and Dan Safiejko (soccer).

KICKBALL: Adult coed teams are needed for a Friday night league at Delaware Park starting July 10. Call Mike at 553-3839.

SCOOTER COMPETITION: The Fuzion “Raise the Gnar” inaugural scooter competition is stopping in Buffalo at Xtreme Wheels Indoor Skate Park on July 11. The event begins at 3 p. m. and is open to the public. Cost to participate is $20. SOFTBALL: The third annual Blackrock Softball one-pitch tournament will be July 11 at the Military Road Fields in Buffalo. Entry fee is $175 due by July 3. Call Paul at 598-9807.

TOUCH FOOTBALL: Players are needed for the second annual Mickey Rats Beach 6-on-6 adult coed tournament on July 27. Call Mike at 553-3839.
