Buffalo firefighters battle two overnight blazes
Buffalo firefighters battled two significant fires in occupied homes within two hours overnight, including a North Buffalo blaze where they searched for a resident they feared might be trapped inside.
The resident, as it turned out, had escaped from the fire at 242 North Park Ave. Firefighters responding to a 12:51 a.m. alarm called for extra companies to fight the fire, which started on the second floor of the home, which is north of Hertel Avenue, two blocks east of Colvin Avenue.
Fire officials listed an estimated $125,000 damage to the home, and fire reports list the cause as a careless attempt to extinguish a small fire that had broken out. The Red Cross was called to assist two adults.
Less than two hours earlier, at 11:02 p.m. Sunday, firefighters were called to 161 Courtland Ave., where a fire that started on the first floor left an estimated $40,000 damage. The occupied home is just north of East Delavan Avenue, a few blocks east of Bailey Avenue.
