Byron apartment house heavily damaged in fire

Story tools:

Ten volunteer fire companies in Genesee County responded to an apartment-house fire that may have started when an ember from a backyard bonfire accidentally landed in a first-floor hallway late Sunday night.

The residents of the three apartments at 6296 Route 262 in the Town of Byron all escaped without injury, and one of them called to report the fire at 9:51 p.m.

Genesee County sheriff's officials said the home was heavily damaged by fire, smoke and water, but not destroyed. The damage estimate was set at $75,000.

Responding to the fire were volunteers from Byron, South Byron, Bergen, Stafford, Bethany, Clarendon, Elba, Oakfield and the town and city of Batavia.
