Citizens turn in suspected drunk drivers

Story tools:

A passing motorist who spotted Dennis J. Snyder's vehicle in a ditch early Saturday stopped to help, but ended up calling 911 instead when he suspected that Snyder had been driving drunk and was trying to flee on foot.

Chautauqua County sheriff's deputies said they arrived around 4:55 a.m. to find Snyder standing in Hanover Road north of Hopper Road in Hanover talking to the motorist. They asked him to submit to a field sobriety test, but he refused.

When deputies checked his record, they found that Snyder had a previous conviction for an alcohol related offense and that his driver's license was suspended.

Snyder, 24, of North Main Street in Cattaraugus, was charged with felony DWI, felony aggravated unlicensed operation and refusing to submit to the sobriety test. He was arraigned in Hanover Town Court and sent to the Chautauqua County Jail after failing to post bail.

In Brant, a citizen's report of a reckless driver Saturday night on Milestrip Road resulted in Erie County sheriff's deputies arresting Deborah S. Santangelo, 43, of Brant, for DWI and other traffic infractions.

Deputies said Santangelo registered .18 percent on a breath test, more than twice the legal limit.
