Good morning, Buffalo: A quick look at what's happening today
Today shapes up as the nicest day we'll have until this weekend, if the National Weather Service's prognostications hold true. It should be sunny and pleasant with temperatures well up into the 50s. The same can't be said for Election Day on Tuesday. A cold front is moving in overnight tonight and there's a good chance of rain until mid-afternoon Tuesday, so if you're voting early, bring along an umbrella. Tuesday's high should reach the upper 40s, but low Tuesday night is expected to be down around the freezing mark. A chance of showers remains in the forecast Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with daytime highs in the low to mid-40s and overnight lows in the mid- to upper 30s. Down on the Southern Tier, there's a chance of snow mixed in with those rain showers.
If you're casting an absentee ballot in Tuesday's election, today is your last chance to pick one up at your county board of elections office or, if you have one already, your last day to mail it in. It has to have a Monday postmark.
The ramifications of Gov. David Paterson's mid-year budget cut proposals are the topic of a public hearing at 10 a.m. in the United Auto Workers hall on George Karl Boulevard in Amherst. Part of a series held across the state, it's hosted by State Senate Finance Committee Chairman Carl Kruger, a Brooklyn Democrat, and State Senate Commerce, Economic Development & Small Business Committee Chairman William T. Stachowski, the leading Buffalo area Democrat in the State Senate. A long list of speakers, including many folks from the medical, educational and social services fields, is scheduled to testify about the terrible impact the $3 billion in proposed cuts will have on their operations and all the people they serve. They'll also suggest other ways that the state might shrink the big budget gap. In case you're wondering, George Karl Boulevard is one of those little cul-de-sacs off Wehrle Drive between the Erie Community College North Campus and Transit Road.
