Man accused of hit-and-run while driving drunk

Story tools:

A Perrysburg man was charged with DWI and other offenses following a hit-and-run accident this morning on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation.

Investigators from the Erie County Sheriff's Office said a woman was backing her car out of a driveway on Versailles Plank Road around 1:20 a.m. when she was struck by a passing vehicle. The woman wasn't hurt and declined first aid.

The vehicle that slammed into her car sustained heavy front-end damage and fled. It was located a short time later on Route 438. Sheriff's investigators were assisted by Seneca Nation marshals.

Joseph R. Peters, 21, was driving while intoxicated, investigators said. He consented to a chemical test that determined his blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit.

Deputies said they discovered that Peters' license had been revoked due to a prior charge of driving while ability-impaired. He was charged with DWI, felony aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident.

Numerous other DWI arrests were made late Saturday and early Sunday by several law enforcement agencies. The State Police, in cooperation with several police departments, staged sobriety checks on Transit Road in the towns of Cheektowaga and Lancaster. About 40 vehicle and traffic arrests were made, including three DWI arrests and three arrests for marijuana possession.
