Hunter charged with shooting deer out of season

Story tools:

State police have arrested a 24-year-old man accused of illegally shooting a deer and then later sticking an arrow in its side to make it look as if it had been shot with a bow and arrow.

Troopers say that Conlee F. Giboo, of Cowlesville, stopped his vehicle on the side of Hand Road in the Town of Sardinia at about 6 p.m. Sunday, while his 5-month-old daughter was in the back seat. Without leaving his vehicle, he shot an eight-point buck that was in a field about 80 yards off the road, according to police reports.

Giboo returned to the scene later with another man, John R. Wainwright, 27, of Holland. As Giboo stuck the arrow into the deer's side, a hunter in a tree stand observed the incident and yelled out that he was going to call police, troopers said. Bow hunting season is under way but deer can not be shot legally until Nov. 21.

The two men then ran into the woods. State troopers, aided by the state Department of Environmental Conservation police and Erie County sheriff's deputies, later found Giboo's wife at the scene and asked her to call her husband by cell phone. The two men then came out of the woods and surrendered.

Trooper Sean Pierce and DEC Officer Chuck Wilson charged Giboo with endangering the welfare of a child, illegal taking of wild deer, discharge of a firearm from a highway and other charges. Wainwright was charged with illegal taking of wild deer and being in the field with a gun and bow at the same time.
