Good morning, Buffalo: A quick look at what's happening today

Wet and breezy are the watch words for the day. A 50 percent chance of showers in the forecast, with high temperature near 58 degrees and wind gusts between 11 an 14 mph, increasing to between 23 and 26 mph. Winds could gust as high as 37 mph. The chance of showers will continue into the evening hours with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 42. The air will remain breezy, with a west wind between 15 and 20 mph.

A large gathering of family, friends and fans will help renowned social documentary photographer Milton Rogovin celebrate his 100th birthday with a cake-cutting at 3 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College.

Lots of beer and a celebration of German culture will be on tap from noon to 5 p.m. in Cazenovia Park Casino off Seneca Street in South Buffalo. Olmsted's Oktoberfest fundraiser will feature the German-American band, the Frankfurters from noon to 3 p.m. and the band Intuition from 3 to 5 p.m. Bratwurst meals, including sausage, sauerkraut and potato salad from the Red Brick Inn will be on sale, as well as beer from Flying Bison Brewery. Wine, cider, commemorative plastic mugs, a 50/50 raffle, games, Dunkin Donuts and warm pretzels will also be available. Admission is $6. Proceeds will benefit the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, stewards of the city's 1,200-acre Olmsted Parks system.

NFL Hall-of-Fame defensive back Michael Haynes, a prostate cancer survivor, will be honored by Roswell Park Cancer Institute during its 19th annual All Star Night beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Shea's Performing Arts Center, 646 Main St. Haynes will be recognized with the Gildner Radner Courage Award for his ongoing efforts to advocate prostate cancer screening for early detection of the disease. Proceeds from the event will go towards live-saving cancer research and patient care programs at Roswell Park, including the Western New York Robotic Surgical Center.

A march from D'Youville College on Porter Avenue to LaSalle Park is planned by 350.org and the Western New York Climate Action Coalition, groups that are seeking to urge world leaders to take action on global warming. It is part of an action that is being taken in over 160 nations around the world and is being billed as the largest grass-roots climate action ever.

The free event will start with a teach-in at 11 p.m. at D'Youville College.

Breakdancers and B-boys from around the world will meet in a 4-on-4 competition from 2 to 10 p.m. at the Buffalo Niagara Court Center, 425 Meyer Road, West Seneca. Dancers in the 4-on-4 Battle @ Buffalo will be competing for tickets to one of the largest international B-boy competitions, the Red Bull BC One in New York City.

Mr. Bobo's Traveling BBQ Allstars — Mike and Angela Cartechine of the Town of Boston, Eric Johnson from New Rochelle and Grace Thompson from Slingerlands — will represent the Empire State in the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational, one of the premier barbecue contests in a country slathered with them. The Lynchburg, Tenn., contest, pits competitors from the United States and around the world vying in seven delectable categories: pork ribs, pork shoulder/butts, beef brisket, chicken, dessert, "cook's choice" and Jack Daniels sauce. An additional category, "Home Cookin' from the Homeland," is reserved for international teams. At steak — make that stake — is more than $30,000 in cash and prizes. The Allstars made the really-big shoo-o-o by winning the Hudson Valley Ribfest, New York State Championship, in August.

An exhibition of new watercolors by Catherine Parker, based on the work of 17th-century mystical Christian poet George Herbert, will be on view during a concert of the Freudig Singers at 7:30 p.m. in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 724 Delaware Ave. The concert will feature the premiere of new work by the group's musical director Roland Martin, called "Such Glorious Gifts," which, like Parker's paintings, is based on the poetry of George Herbert.

Impact Artists' Gallery will hold its Starry Night Gala from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Tri-Main Center, 2495 Main St., Suite 545. Tickets for the gala are $120 a couple and include selected artwork, music, food and wine. Call 835-6817.

Think of it as bidding on a bit of heaven. Nearly 60 acres of land on Eighteen Mile Creek featuring a spectacular 50-foot gorge is being auctioned off beginning at 1 p.m. at the site itself. The former Toad Hollow Boy Scout campground, at 8146 Sisson Highway (Route 75) in Eden, will be sold to the highest bidder. The site started as a campground in the 1920s and was used by Boy Scouts into the 1970s. Cash Cunningham, auctioneer for Cash Realty & Auctions, compares the site to Letchworth State Park.

Seventh- and eighth-graders are headed out bright and early to the 15th annual Youth Police Academy in Buffalo Police Headquarters, 74 Franklin St., beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing to 3 p.m. The youngsters will have the opportunity to learn about cybercrime, crime prevention, peer pressure and how violence can affect the lives of teens. They will also get the chance to talk with law enforcement experts from the Buffalo Police Department and the FBI. The academy, organized by the Citizen Advisory Group to the Police Commissioner, is supported by the Buffalo Police Department, the FBI Foundation and the West Side Community Center.

The resurgent University at Buffalo Bulls put their gridiron prowess to stiff test against MAC foe Western Michigan at Waldo Stadium in good old Kalamazoo-zoo-zoo. The Bulls — 3-4 and 1-2 in th MAC — are coming off a 21-17 win over Akron — their second straight victory. The Bulls defenders will have their hands full with Western Michigan's senior quarterback Tim Hiller, coming off a record-breaking game against Central Michigan when he completed 40 of 66 passes for 410 yards and two touchdowns, albeit in a losing effort. The 66 pass attempts in the game were a single-game record for the school. Alas, The Bulls are 0-4 against the Broncos — one of three MAC opponents the UB squad has never beaten. Saturday's game gets under way at 2 p.m. and can be heard on 1230 AM WECK in Buffalo, as well as 1280 AM and 107.3 FM in Rochester.

Hungry for local grub? The Field & Fork Network and the Athenaeum Hotel at Chautauqua Institution will put out an elaborate spread in a five-course Farm to Table Dinner, featuring wine pairings and locally grown foods, in season, prepared by Chef Ross Warhol. The menu includes delectables like Raindance Farm sun cheese, Green Heron Growers' shiitake mushrooms, Freeman Homestead pork with sage spaetzle, a house-made sauerkraut and roasted pumpkin and brown butter molasses biscuit. Delirious taste buds exact a cost: $89 per person. The feast gets under way at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar, local cheeses and artisan hors d'oeuvres, followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. ... Aaah, what the heck. Make it a pepperoni pizza.
