Driver flees scene after crash on I-990 ramp

Story tools:

The driver of a vehicle apparently fled the scene after his car went off an I-990 ramp, flipped over and became submerged in either a pond or a swampy area early this morning, said Amherst police, who are considering possible charges against the driver.

Emergency personnel rushed to the scene, at the Sweet Home Road exit of the I-990, at about 2:15 a.m.

Concerns that the driver may have been trapped prompted Getzville volunteer firefighters to use thermal-imaging equipment to make sure no one was inside the car. The vehicle was empty.

"We've been in contact with someone who claims to be the driver," Assistant Police Chief Timothy Green said at mid-morning.

Possible charges could include leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, authorities said.
