A 16-year-old Ripley youth was fatally injured Thursday night when he was struck by a CSX train at an ungated crossing in the Town of Ripley, Chautauqua County sheriff's officials said today.

Kenneth S. Strang was part of a group of young people walking south on Goodrich Street shortly after 9 p.m. As a westbound train approached, several youths crossed the tracks while the lights and bells were activated, witnesses told sheriff's deputies.

The 16-year-old boy also attempted to cross the tracks but was struck by the train. He was taken to Westfield Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
