Here's a list of things you'll never hear said about Jason Pominville: He whines; he's cheap and dirty; he's rude; he's a terrible hockey player. Because no one says those things, everyone is now able to say something else: The Buffalo Sabres forward is a finalist for the Lady Byng Trophy.
Pominville is one three players up for the Lady Byng, awarded annually to the player who exhibits the best sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability. It is Pominville's first nomination, and he is joined by two-time winner Pavel Datsyuk of Detroit and Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis. The winner, chosen by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, will be named June 12 in Toronto at the league's award show. The only Sabre to win the award was Gilbert Perreault after the 1972-73 season.
Pominville has quietly become one of the more respected players in the league. He had 27 goals and a team-high 53 assists this year while amassing just 20 penalty minutes. He was the Sabres' captain for March and April, and he is always available for questions from fans and media. Pominville is in Maine this week with Team USA to train for next month's world championships.
